Pickup Vehicle Carrying Cattle Remains Seized in Ranchi, One Detained | Jharkhand News

Ranchi: Ranchi police have seized a pickup vehicle allegedly carrying cattle heads and skeletal remains in the Pithoria police station area of Jharkhand’s capital, detaining one person for questioning in connection with the case. The vehicle was intercepted in Piru Tola after officers received specific intelligence that animal remains were being transported to another location for unlawful disposal or sale. Acting swiftly on the information, a police team launched a targeted operation, cordoned off the locality and stopped the suspected vehicle during a search drive.

Officials said the remains were recovered during an inspection, following which the vehicle was impounded and taken to the police station for further examination. The incident has triggered concern among local residents and renewed scrutiny over the illegal transport and disposal of animal waste in peri-urban areas.

Residents said the police presence in the neighbourhood was unusually heavy during the early hours of the operation. A local witness, who identified himself as Ramesh Mahto, said officers arrived in several vehicles before surrounding the area. “There was sudden commotion in the morning and police teams were moving quickly. Later we learnt that a pickup vehicle had been seized. People were shocked,” he said. Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the detained individual, but confirmed that questioning is under way to determine the origin of the remains, their intended destination and whether others were involved. Investigators are also examining ownership records of the vehicle and possible links to a wider network engaged in illegal transport, slaughter-related activity or unauthorised dumping. Sources indicated that additional detentions could follow if further evidence emerges.

Senior officers said the matter was being handled with sensitivity given the potential for public tension. Patrols have been increased in Pithoria and adjoining areas as a precautionary measure, while authorities have appealed to residents not to circulate rumours or unverified claims on social media. Police said forensic and documentary checks would be carried out on the seized vehicle and recovered material, with legal action to follow once the preliminary inquiry is completed. Officials added that enforcement against illegal transportation of animal remains and improper disposal practices would be intensified in the district. The administration has maintained that the investigation will proceed strictly in accordance with the law and on the basis of verified evidence.
